Employers: post internship openings online FREE

Many of the ACEC/CO member firms regularly take advantage of a rewarding source of enthusiastic, promising workforce- STUDENT INTERNS. Internship programs are sponsored by all of the engineering schools in Colorado, and college interns are generally available in a wide variety of disciplines and range of experience. Interns today generally have adequate computer experience, possess a higher basic skill level than temporary or nonprofessional employees and come with an enthusiasm and curiosity which can be refreshing and rewarding to a firm in need of a little "new blood". Intern hourly pay ranges ($10.00 to $17.00 per hour) are also relatively inexpensive.

Although the benefits and rewards of hiring interns can be substantial, prospective employers should recognize that the intern program is more than just a summer help program. Participation in an intern program is accompanied by important responsibilities for both the employer and the intern. The employer has the obligation of teaching, mentoring and expanding the intern's knowledge of the engineering profession. Ideally, a professional mentor who has the patience and ability to educate should be assigned to the incoming intern. The intern, on the other hand, must realize that summer internship is not an exclusively educational process and that they are being paid to provide practical assistance to the company.

ACEC/CO members have used interns as field technicians, CAD operators, survey assistants, research assistants and in a broad range of other roles. It is also possible to make arrangements to share an intern with another company, thus allowing the intern a wider range of experience while reducing the financial responsibility of either firm. Finally, the intern of today can be the future experienced employee of tomorrow for those firms with the necessary patience. The best time to interview and select summer interns is in March and April. Most of the best candidates will already have positions by the first of May. To participate in the intern program, call any of the following university or high school contacts.
