Education/Scholarships/Interns - Committee Activities
ACEC/CO Education Committee is involved in a variety of activities that
promote engineering among students in grades K-12 and college. The
committee encourages students to consider engineering as a career
choice.
ACEC/CO Kids'
page: to provide students information and activities that
make them aware of the engineering profession. Fun activities
include
building a popsicle stick bridge and a handout on how engineers use
sound
in their works. Provide a list of educational links for students,
teachers and parents providing math, science and engineering
resources.
Interns:
to encourage firms to hire college /high school interns. Contact
the ACEC/CO office for more information at 303-832-2200 or email acec@acec-co.org.
Scholarships:
to provide scholarships to high school and college students. In
conjunction with the Joint Education Committee of the Design and
Construction Industry, additional
scholarship opportunities are available.
Speakers: to
provide speakers for students about engineering or related
activities,
such as, water in Colorado history for 4th graders and what
opportunities
are available in consulting engineering for seniors in college.
MESA Partnership: to strengthen its relationship with
the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA)
organization. This organization encourages K-12 students,
especially minority students, to pursue careers in math and
science.
University Communications:
- One of the missions
of the Education committee is to strengthen relationships and
communications
with the Deans (and Associate Deans of Academic Affairs) at each
Colorado Engineering School.
- Senior Design Projects:
to provide data and resource people to the state engineering schools'
senior
design classes about "real world" projects. We need Senior
Design Projects. Can you help?
- Career Fairs:
to participate in the career fairs for the state engineering schools
and
high schools with a display booth about consulting engineering with
volunteers
to answer questions.
Joint Education Committee:
One of the missions of the Education Committee is to host two joint
education
meetings each year to draw the professional societies, university
organizations and government agencies
together on common educational issues.
Videos/brochures:
to provide a variety of entertaining/educational videos about
engineering
and the value of math and science for students K-12 . These videos are
available for engineers giving presentations to students for a two-week
period of time at no cost. Some of these videos have related hands-on
activities.
Brochures about engineering and bookmarks with a science
experiment/fact
are also available.
- NOTE: ACEC/CO has produced
a 24-minute video, "The Invisible World", that introduces young
students
to the exciting world of bridge building. ACEC/CO firms have
donated
copies of this video that were placed in every Colorado middle
school.
- NOTE: ACEC/CO has produced
a 24-minute video, "Documentary: A Century of Change" showcasing the
engineering
achievements of the last century such as - rural electrication, air
conditioning,
bridges, highways, etc.
