What Has ACEC/CO Done For You?

As a collective voice, ACEC/CO board, committees, members and staff have worked hard to promote consulting engineers and their contributions to their communities, and to make valuable connections to improve the business climate for engineers.  The following are recent actions and activities for the last two months:

  • Our annual Legislative Day brought 35 engineers to the Capitol to discuss our issues with 23 legislators.  ACEC/CO and the Legislative Committee are monitoring legislation that impacts our members’ businesses such as the repeal of business tax exemptions, Change Order bill SB10-116, repeal of portions of FASTER SB09-108, Architects’ bill HB10-1148 to repeal the continued competency portion, and Colorado Open Records Act SB10-114.

  • The ACEC/CO Board of Directors agreed to support the Protect Colorado Communities coalition and to oppose the 2010 Ballot Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 that will greatly impact the state and its local communities ability to provide services for economic development.
  • The Board approved waiving $100 application fee for affiliate members To help strengthen the organization and encourage participation by our member firms’ “up and comers."

  • Business Practices Committee/Senior Advisory Group has developed an extensive strategy to work with agencies such as the City of Denver concerning the troublesome indemnification language in their contracts.

  • As a result of the Sustainability Summit that ACEC/CO hosted with several state agencies: 1) ACEC/CO will be giving a presentation before CDPHE’s Pollution Prevention Advisory Board on innovative technologies developed by engineers, the risks involved and partnership that must be developed with regulatory agencies regarding these new technologies; 2) Our TERC representative Lauren Evans attended the TERC sub-committee on sustainability as the only public sector member and discussed innovation and risk.

  • ACEC/CO’s recent TV program, “Colorado Engineers 2010”, is being shown on Comcast stations throughout the state through March and on many local cable stations.  This TV show highlights our Engineering Excellence Awards winners’ technical expertise and sustainability features of their projects.    Read More..

PAC Contributions Make a Difference

Thanks to CEPAC Contributors
CEPAC – Consulting Engineers Political Action Committee – Allows ACEC/CO to contribute to state candidates that support ACEC/CO’s positions.  By state law we are only allowed to contribute a maximum of $400 to a legislator for each two-year election cycle.  Next summer, the CEPAC Committee headed by Mark Hamouz will work with our lobbyists, Bill and Lacee Artist, to determine the amount of contribution to each candidate.  Each candidate is evaluated for a CEPAC contribution based on their position on business issues important to ACEC/CO, not on their party affiliation.  If there is a candidate that you feel we should support, please contact Marilen Reimer at the ACEC/CO office at 303-832-2200 or at mar@acec-co.org.

We would like to thank member firms who have made contributions this year through the voluntary dues check-off last July.  The dues check-off is a simple and convenient way to make contributions to CEPAC. For 2009-10, we raised $5,964.80.  If you haven't made a contribution yet this year, and wish to, please contact the ACEC/CO office at 303-832-2200.  Firms can contribute up to $250/year or $500/election cycle.

ACEC PAC
The American Council of Engineering Companies Political Action Committee (ACEC/PAC) was established in 1975 to allow ACEC members the opportunity to support and keep federal candidates in office who support a pro-business legislative agenda. ACEC/PAC is bipartisan and operates out in the open in full compliance with the Federal Election Campaign Act and applicable state laws. Each state is represented by a PAC Champion to help meet its state's annual PAC goal. Rob Refvem is Colorado ACEC PAC Champion.

The Federal Election Commission requires ACEC/PAC to seek your approval before soliciting you to contribute to the consulting engineers industry's primary political action committee.  Click here for Prior Approval Frequently Asked Questions, List of firms with Prior Approval, Talking Points of why you should sign Prior Approval Form and for Prior Approval Form

Unlike CEPAC – the state PAC which takes corporate contributions, ACEC PAC must be personal funds either by personal check or credit card.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Marilen Reimer at the ACEC/CO office, 303-832-2200, mar@acec-co.org or Rob Refvem at 303-721-1440, rob.refvem@fhueng.com.

Committee Spotlight

Education Committee: “Be a Hero, Tell a Kid about Engineering”

ACEC/CO’s Education Committee is continuously busy reaching out to students. After all, the future of engineering lies in the hands of young people. The committee’s focus is to make students aware of consulting engineering as a career option and to provide internship and scholarship opportunities to help them become a professional consulting engineer. They work to develop relationships with schools, student chapters of engineering organizations, and career service departments.

Committee Chair Jim Fletcher said that the committee always has a full plate of ongoing projects. Annual projects include attending Career Fairs at CU Boulder, Colorado State, Colorado School of Mines and CU Denver. Volunteering at the ACEC/CO booth at these career fairs gives the Council and its members a great opportunity to get in front of students.

The committee also provides judges for the MESA (Mathematics-Engineering-Science Achievement) student competition; volunteers for Construction Career Days; and judges for CU Denver senior design class projects. The committee supports STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), GESET (Girls Exploring Science, Engineering and Technology), and MESA activities.

“The most valuable part for me being a member of the Education Committee has been my interaction with students at the high school level during Construction Career Days and with teachers at the Westminster HS Career Academy Workshop,” Fletcher said. “These events provided me the opportunity to understand the desires of both students and teachers and to offer my experience as a professional engineer.”

Fletcher said that one of the committee’s goals this year is to increase its ability to get the message out via web-based tools such as Facebook, YouTube and enhancements on the ACEC/CO web page. He said that they are continuing this focus for next year and are looking for new ideas in this area.

Fletcher said because of the recurring programs and projects, the committee sometimes lacks for new ideas and fresh enthusiasm, therefore he would like to see more people getting involved. The Education Committee not only provides a vital piece to ACEC/CO’s efforts, but is also an asset to the community as well.

“The Education Committee members are ambassadors to the community who provide background, perspectives and experience in how engineering is pervasive in everyone's life and who communicate how engineering supports the health, well being, mobility and general welfare of our citizenry," Fletcher said.

If you are interested in joining the Education Committee, would like some more information or just want to sit-in on a meeting, don’t hesitate to contact us at 303-832-2200 or at kimbrezall@acec-co.org. Fresh minds and new ideas are always welcome!

The following are some additional opportunities to interact with students:

  • We still need volunteers to answer student's questions and run the ACEC/CO booth at the UCD career fair on Tuesday, February 16 and for the CSU career fair on Wednesday, February 25. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Kim at 303-832-2200 or at kimbrezall@acec-co.org. Click here to view sign up sheet.

  • CU Boulder Career Services provides intern supervisor training and networking opportunities for employers. CU Boulder is hosting an annual networking night for students on March 3, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. and need 40-45 business representatives to participate in the event. Click on the link above for more information.

Future Leaders ~ Celebrating 11 Years of Leadership Excellence for Engineering Professionals

Coaching for Results  Part II - How to Correct a Performance Problem (and Motivate an Employee toward Improvement)
(Part two of three installments)
By Nancy Whitsel of Performance Resources Consulting, and ACEC/CO Future Leaders Instructor

Future Leader Participant Quotes:

"Workshops are ideal for engineers with 3-5 years experience.  We need to send upcoming key people next year.  These methods are essential to the management style we promote."

"FL is a valuable tool in developing project management and leadership skills of employees (especially mid-level managers)."

"Positive experience that provided great tools for the long-term improvement of our company.  I plan to send others from my firm."

The term coaching encompasses a variety of communication skills from informing, teaching, and encouraging to advising, correcting and mentoring.  Last month we discussed five steps to complement and strengthen staff performance.  This month, I offer six steps you can use to correct poor performance quickly and in a way that motivates your employee to improve.

Six Step Coaching Techniques

If the employee is usually a high achiever, making a correction can be difficult.  It is helpful to have a predetermined outline of action steps to follow especially when there is a performance dip.

  1. BE FIRM--NOT MEAN.  Focus on the problem & its consequences.
  2. ASK & LISTEN.  What is the person willing to do to make it better?
  3. DEVELOP A MUTUAL STRATEGY  & write down the agreement, because this:
    • Makes the plan concrete
    • Demonstrates listening and emphasizes importance
    • Insures no misunderstanding of what should happen
    • Creates documentation if necessary for discipline or legal action
  4. EXPRESS CONFIDENCE.  Believe that the person can and will solve the problem.  Tell him/her that you still like the person, but NOT their behavior.
  5. FOLLOW-UP.  Set a specific date to review the issue.  Underscore the importance of meeting.  Don’t put off this meeting and be sure to reinforce good behavior.
  6. PRAISE IMMEDIATELY.  Notice the first time there is a behavior correction and positively comment on the improvement.

Key elements of the above steps emphasizes maintaining employee self-esteem and focusing on improving behavior.  Reducing defensiveness, allows the employee to focus his/her attention on solving the problem,  rather than protecting their self-esteem.

See the ACEC/CO Newsletter next month for the part three of COACHING-- How to use compliments to improve morale and motivate your staff.

Your project managers can learn more about ‘people-management’ by attending the 8 months of Future Leader workshops.  The next Level I series will start March 2, 2010.  Log on to acec-co.org to hear a video or to read more about specific topics and how your project managers can gain by attending.  To register please call Jennifer Shaw at 303-832-2200 or email jennifer@acec-co.org.  We look forward to welcoming your engineering supervisors to these practical and award winning workshops next year.  On behalf of the ACEC Future Leader program, thank you for supporting these popular professional development workshops in 2010!
